Mazda’s SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed is one of the better conventional automatics on the road — a proper torque-converter box in a world going CVT. But “better” doesn’t mean bulletproof. Common Mazda Transmission Problems We Fix

The Mazda gearbox symptoms we see most:

• CX-5 gearbox jerking when shifting

That cold 2-3 shift deserves a closer look because it confuses a lot of owners. The gearbox is fine once warmed up, but the first few shifts of the day slam. On the SkyActiv-Drive this is typically a combination of the known control issue from the TSB and fluid that’s lost its cold-flow properties. A fluid exchange with the correct Mazda FZ-spec ATF plus the updated adaptation procedure usually transforms it. If the harshness persists hot, then we’re looking at worn clutch packs — still very repairable.

Delayed kickdown is the other big one — you floor it to overtake, and the gearbox thinks about it for a second too long. Sometimes it’s adaptation, sometimes it’s a lazy solenoid or dropping line pressure from a worn pump. Either way, driving around it by flooring it harder just wears the clutches faster.
